The hours alone with Luke stretched out before Teddy like a prison sentence. Ben helped, but not enough. Going out to eat again helped, but not enough. Why had she said anything? To make him back away, that’s why. Except she hadn’t wanted him to start treating her the way he was, like a maiden aunt he was responsible for but didn’t much like.

She didn’t share his faith that anyone from his family would come to help or that anyone from Mason, which had to be close to a hundred miles north of them, even could come that quickly. By mid-afternoon, Teddy could barely pretend to focus on cards as she considered how to tell Luke she was going back to her own hotel whether he liked it or not and how to make Ben accept it with a minimum of fuss.

Two sharp raps sounded on the door. Teddy froze, still unwilling to believe. Luke opened the door to three men. Big men with hard faces who made the room smaller. They dropped their gear on the floor by the wall, each thud causing Teddy to flinch. Two of them looked enough like Luke she knew they were Bennetts, but the third....

Ben’s already pale face went whiter. His breathing accelerated, and his eyes darted around the room. Teddy took a firm hold of his good arm and moved him to the bed. “Here. If you and I sit on the bed, there’ll be enough room for everyone.”

Keeping Ben from throwing himself to the other side of the room or crawling under the bed wasn’t enough because she couldn’t keep him quiet. “That’s an Indian,” he said. “How come the hotel let an Indian in here?”

Amusement flickered across all the faces except the expressionless dark one that had Ben so frightened.

“Cord came in the same way you did,” Luke said. “And he’s only half-Indian, the same as he’s half my uncle.”

Teddy concentrated on the introductions. The blond men who looked so much like Luke except with lighter eyes and blond hair more ash than gold were father and son, Luke’s Uncle Ephraim and Cousin Pete. She smiled and nodded, and the whole time she wanted to stare at the still, dark man. How could he be related to Luke in any way?

Cord and Luke were built the same. Long and lean, as if their strength was coupled with speed and agility. That’s where similarities ended. Any woman who laid eyes on Luke Bennett would think handsome. If she saw his smile, she’d think charming.

Even without that scar on his cheek, any woman who saw Cord Bennett would think run! How dangerous was he? His eyes. She’d never seen eyes like that on a man. They belonged on some predator.

Ben held her hand. She held back.

Ephraim and Pete took the chairs. Luke sat on the bed next to Ben. Cord didn’t move from where he stood by the door. Teddy concentrated on Ben’s hand in hers and stared at the carpet.

“How’s Pa doing?” Luke asked Pete.
